My First Day & The Apple Company Store

First I must apologise for this post being a little me, me, me, me, me ;o)

As you may know from a previous post I was in San Francisco last week as Monday 18th April was my first day at my new company,Vindicia. I love San Francisco and being there on my first day and being able to meet my new colleagues was fantastic. I learnt so much and got myself even more excited about the opportunity than I already was. I haven’t felt the same buzz about my day job for years and whilst moving from a Large company such as Oracle is a little scary, I feel like it’s the best thing I could have done.

If you follow me on twitter you’ll also know that San Francisco experienced an earthquake measuring around 3.4. This was a first for me and I thought that a large truck had backed into the building given the loud rumbling and shacking of the building. It only lasted around 5-10 seconds but it was still one of the oddest sensations. Feeling what you always expect to be solid ground move is just wrong and makes you feel pretty small and insignificant.

So I’ve been introduced to all the great people at Vindicia, experienced my first earthquake, what else could happen that would really make this a special week for me…

The last time I was in San Francisco last year I was lucky enough to get a tour of the campus with Graeme Devine who was working for Apple at the time. After having had a look around and drinking coffee in Cafe Macs (the restaurant in the centre of the infinite loop campus) I took a look in the The Company Store and picked up a few essentials, as you do. At the time I was still writing my book and I commented on how amazing it would be to walk into that very store and see my book on the shelf….dreamer that I am….

You can imagine my excitement when I received an email from my editor, Chuck Toperek, telling me that while visiting the Company Store the previous week he had seen my book on the self. On reading this I turned immediately into a little girl giggling and happy clapping with excitement. So, after my meetings had finished on Wednesday last week I shot down to the Company Store before heading to the airport. We didn’t have much time but my colleague from the UK, Adrian, insisted that he drive us down there.

So, I walked into the store and there, in the small book section was my book. I don’t think I could stop grinning. It was exciting enough actually being able to write a book on something you love, but for it then to be on the shelf in THE Apple Store was just the icing on the cake and was an amazing end to a great week.

After a little coaxing from Adrian I spoke to the staff and they were happy for me to take a couple of pictures with the book. It was a great experience and something I’m not going to forget.

So there you have it, a crazy, tiring but exciting week for me and the start of something new. I am going to be busy getting to grips with my new role, but the apps and tutorials will continue so watch this space.

Mike

Hi Mike,

I would be grinning from ear to ear also if I had a book in THE Apple Store. Quite an accomplishment. All that and an earthquake. Quite a week. Love the pix.

Congrats and all the best in the new job.
