Tiny Wings – Readers Games
I’m hoping everyone has already seen the game Tiny Wings. This is an incredible little game that has turned a very simple yet ingenious mechanic into a great looking and highly addictive game.
Main Menu
The idea is that your a small bird with very small wings that has always dreamed of flying. Luckily the world in which you live is covered in rolling hills that allows you to slide down them to gain speed and then jump off the tops. There are various items to collect such as coins, some of which give you a speed boost as well objectives such as touching the clouds as often as possible and moving from one island to another as often as possible too.
All the time your sliding and jumping you have to balance the collection of coins with the distance your travelling. There is no time to hang around as night is fast approach and as soon as night falls your little bird will be asleep ending your jumping adventures.
The sound and graphics are excellent. They work really well given the cute look and nature of the game. The clever thing I like is that every island you visit is generated procedurally, so the content is never the same adding a great variety to the game.
This is one of those games that you can pick up while waiting for a bus or a lesson/meeting to start and have some quick fun, but it’s also something that can become very addictive. I have spent ages trying to fly higher, get more perfect slides in a row and get to as many new islands as possible.
This is in my mind a perfect iPhone game that sums up what a good iPhone game should have. I really wish I had come up with both the idea and great looking graphics myself :o)
Tiny Wings is currently top of the paid App Store charts so is doing really well. Is this the next angry birds, well, I think it could be. Excellent execution of the idea, cute, fun to play and all round worth so much more than the £0.59 price tag.
I strongly recommend you try the game if you haven’t already and I’d like to also thank Andreas for mentioning the 71Squared tutorials in Tiny Wings. That is great to see and I hope in some very very small way the tutorials and work we do on 71Squared has helped to create this fantastic game :o)

@Blake: you literally flip the device and play upside down (i.e., rotate the iPhone 180˚)
@Edward: lol, I’m stuck on x22: Do 5 cloud touches while in fever mode :P

Great lil’ game! It mentioned 71squared as having great tutorials so I followed it up and the tutorials here are exactly what I’ve been looking for, when I start releasing game I will certainly give you guys a mention.

I found your website through this game. (My high score is 151,642 with 24 x multiplier) I’m currently learning iPhone programming through iTunes U and websites like this. This game is an inspiration on a lot of levels. Andreas seems to be a lone developer but he seems to have what most programmers lack: Design skills!!! A lot of programmers fail because they attempt to design graphical elements themselves – with some horrific results. This game hits the nail on the head with both looks and gameplay.

I got to multiplayer 20 but I can’t beat it. :( I don’t get what fever mode is. Tells me I got to get to island 5 without it. But how can I when I don’t know what it is. :( I been trying to beat it for like 3 days now. What am I doing wrong?? D:

If you hit 3 slopes in a row perfectly, you enter fever mode. Continue hitting slopes perfectly and you will remain in fever mode. Don’t hit slopes perfectly not to get into fever mode:)

You have to turn your ipod/iphone upside down at the very start of the game – when you awake the bird from sleep (so the game and screen is upside down) you have to play the whole game upside down, all the jumps, etc. until you reach island 5.

@nathalie ahh yes, this one took me ages and it was very frustrating. My tactic was to keep making good jumps, but as you’re approaching a valley make sure you ‘bump’ into the hill before .. then slide down.. i don’t know if that makes any sense but it took me lots and lots and lots of tries to get it.

Thanks for the great comments. Tiny Wings is indeed an inspiration and one of the most well executed games I’ve seen in a long time.
It’s great to think that the tutorials are now finding a new audience and will hopefully help people in some way to getting their dream game up and running.
I’m hoping the new tutorials I’ve just started on 3D will also prove to be a gentle route into playing with 3D as well.
Thanks again for the great comments as it certainly helps me keep pushing on with the tutorials :o)

I’d love to know how Andreas did the procedural graphics myself.
The island hills and valleys definitely seem statically defined and consistent from game to game, but it’s amazing how well tuned he got them to be consistent with the gravity and arcs. Very clever stuff.

Love this game. Its amazing what can be done using third-party tools. Great tools, too!
My only wish is that it had an easy mode so i could at least finish the islands once in awhile. :). I’ve played it about 200 times and reached the seventh island maybe three times.

Awesome game, I am so close to the end but just can’t do it. I got to island 9, I got through island 4 in fever mode but I just can’t get close to 20 cloud touches not being in fever mode :( Any tips?

To get to island four without great slides try not leaving the ground. As you get to the top of the hill press the screen so you ride back down the hill with momentum, I’ve found that landing on the tops is harder than doing it this way.

Ok so I’m like stuck on x24. I’ve tried maybe 300 different times and still can’t beat the “reach island 4 without any great slides” objective. Really been bugging me! I almost deleted the game I was so frustrated thankfully I didn’t ;). But anyways if anyone has some tips please let me know :)

Ok, if anyone is stuck on “Reach the 4th island without ant great slides,” here is what you have to do: Try not to get off of the ground, try to go up and down every hill.
If anyone is stuck on “Turn the device upside down and reach Island 5 (;” here is what you have to do: Literally turn your iPod, iPhone, iPad upside down and reach island 5. But that is the hard way. All you really have to do is lay on your back and play normally, turn upside down with your device, or tilt your device backwards a little.

Please help!!! I bought an iPhone 4S and I used iCloud to re-sync tiny wings, but I am just on 10x with no old scores or nests. Game center has my achievements saves but they aren’t on the actual game!!!

@Hannah Anon is correct – I did it pretty easy by not jumping *at all*. Hold on downslope, release at bottom, hold again right before top. It’s like a roller coaster – and you can make it to the 4th island with a decent amount of time to spare.
