iOS 4 and iPhone 4

I think we all knew what the new iPhone looked like, but to actually see it and hear about the Retina screen (326ppi OMG!!!!!) and the other additions was fantastic.

The screen looks amazing and I’m really keen to see it in the flesh. I’m also really pleased it contains the A4 chip. Given how well the iPad performs, this phone should really motor. My 3G feels more and more sluggish every day now I use the iPad, so I’m really looking forward to having a phone that has the same snappy feel.

The camera also seems much improved as well. I’m glad they have included 720p HD video as well. For me this is going to be a really handy feature. Having kids and going out on trips, the fewer devices I need to carry the better. I know it won’t have all the features of a full HD video camera, but for my needs I think it’s going to be perfect.

The gyroscope was a surprise and I’m still getting my head around how it could be used in games. I’m sure there are plenty of clever people who already have a shed load of ideas for it, but it could be interesting.

All in all I was pleased with what I saw. I’ve downloaded iOS 4, which I’ve not had a chance to do before, and I’m going to be checking it out against the tutorials. Over the coming weeks I’ll make some tutorials to update areas that need to be tweaked for the new OS.

What do you guys think? are you going to rush out and get one or hang back?

Anyone thought of any cool uses for the gyroscope yet :o)

Mike

Gyroscope…. I think any game with the first person perspective would definitely benefit… I find the controls on Call of Duty Zombies for example a little ‘flimsy’… with touch on one portion of the screen doing one thing and touches somewhere else doing another…. but if all the turning controls were removed from the screen and you had to physically turn to confront the zombie chewing on your shoulder… then that would not only work better control-wise, but it will make the whole game experience far more immersive… it will be interesting to see what other people come up with!!

I’m really happy with the announcements for iPhone 4 and iOS4… And even happier the wait is not going to be all that long… even for us lot in the UK!!

Moreover… when multitasking is rolled out onto the iPad in a few months. That is going to be a very welcome addition to an already fantastic device!

Lots to look forward to!

yep, I called AT&T my Wife and I are eligible for the upgrade so I am definitely getting 2 32gig..
I watched the video of wwDC…all I can say is wow!! I think it will be a long time before anyone catches up with apple’s technology. Eat your heart out DROID..

Mike, I hope all the Tut’s still work!! I agree with you, after using the iPad for awhile my phone seems dog slow…

I was told from the guy at the AT&T store we could pre-order the 15th, so I set my calendar to remind me at 8am… GO OT THE AT&T STORE!!!

I will get one, my 3g is done. I think it’s time to retire that old hog. I have many really cool ideas for games with that gyro function, one of them requires 3d skills…..that I don’t have…..anyone interested in team work?

Mike,

How do you think the new resolution is going to affect our OpenGL ES projects? What do you think we will have to do to support that, and will we be able to make backward compatible apps?

Simon  on June 9th, 2010

@JasonT

I don’t think the new resolution will cause any problems, but if you’ve got some higher res artwork I’d update your game with it, just to get the wow factor.

@Mike

I’ve got a couple of ideas for that Gyroscope, and once I’ve had a chance to play around with it I’ll let you know what I’ve got planned ;)

Looks great, I really want the camera and that amazing looking iMovie!

As far as the retina screen it looks great, but the current models already have amazing screens with very high PPI and I can’t really imagine seeing a significant difference.

I skipped over the 3GS thinking the next model would have video chat.. glad I guessed right.

@JasonT, we can’t discuss specifics on the forum due to the current NDA, but I don’t think you’ll have to worry about old apps working on the new device and I’m sure having apps that can work on iPhone 4 and 3GS will be fine.

I really do think Apple have done it again with the iPhone 4. The hardware is a good step up and iOS 4 looks to be a great companion.

I really want to get my teeth into another project, but time is just SOO limited :( and with all the new APIs in iOS 4 it feels like me head is going to explode if I try to learn too much more :o)

It’s kinda scary how much new Apple hardware keeps coming out while I’m trying to finish just one game. Maybe I should just aim at the desktop Mac, and down-port to whatever the current hand-held flavor is at the time of release.

It’s not as bad as the PC market, where you have to worry about an infinite configurations of an infinite parts, but I wish I’d got onto this thing earlier.

The last thing I coded a game on was the Commodore 64: the same hardware* for the ~decade of its commercial life!

I would have preferred more power and RAM than a high res screen. But maybe that’s just me. :)

Rowan.

* I won’t mention that filter.
