Sir Lamorak’s Quest Sneak Peak

Hi all

I’ve managed to put together a short movie of Sir Lamorak’s Quest. I wanted to give you all a preview of how the game is coming along and how its looking. I’m really pleased with how its coming along and I cant wait to get the book and the game finished and out in the wild.

If you have any comments please leave them as I’d love to hear what you think. Its not complete and still a lot to do, but I was eager to give you a sneak peak.

Sir Lamorak’s Quest Demo

Enjoy

Mike

Much of a fan of Atic Atac are you Michael? :-)

mike  on October 30th, 2009

LOL, Atic Atac was the first game I ever had. I got it with my Spectrum 48k for Christmas in 1983.

Very much a nod to my first game in Sir Lamorak’s Quest :o)

What a great job you’ve done Mike. The game has really come along well and it looks awesome. It definitely helps to have a graphics artist. The flow of the game looks really smooth. I like the way you implemented the joy pad and the ax and spawning of entities. I bet after your book is released there will be a lot of games based on Sir Lamorak’s Quest…. :)

Coming along nicely!

dilbertian  on October 31st, 2009

mike,
I can’t wait for the book as it will surely be awesome if it’s on par with your tutorials! I see you figured out how to connect IB to your OpenGL – I am trying to do the same for my settings screen with a project derived from Tutorial 10 but am not having much luck.

Any chance you could provide some sample code or advice?

mike  on October 31st, 2009

Hi dilbertian

I’ve put a topic in the community forum, link at the top of the page, that goes through how I did this in Sir Lamorak’s Quest. Its not a full tutorial, but I hope it helps.

Hi Mike,

It’s looking really good, who did the illustrations for you?

mike  on November 1st, 2009

Hi Simon

The graphics are being done by a guy called Ryan Sumo. His is a freelance graphical artist which good rates. His website is http://ryansumo.carbonmade.com/

He is a great guy who does not only come up with great art but also cool ideas as well :o)

P.S. If you check out his site you will see the concept art has been generating for me for Sir Lamorak’s Quest. He does some amazing concept work to make sure we are on the same page and then turns them into game assets. Genius.

Hi Mike,

I will check it out, thanks. Re your game and book, it might be worth posting that vid on YouTube ad well. Should drive some mire traffic your way and assist in generating further interest in your upcoming book.

mike  on November 1st, 2009

Thanks Simon. Its going to be heading up to YouTube later this evening :o)

I agree, the more interest we can drive the better.

Good work! Perhaps on the next tutorial a polite request for people to use social media to link to your material wouldn’t hurt ;)

mike  on November 2nd, 2009

That’s a good idea :o)

Game looks great Mike! I can’t wait for the book to come out.

rookie  on November 3rd, 2009

great! This will be a very valuable book!

cybergreg  on November 3rd, 2009

Mike – demo looks great, can wait for the book!

mike  on November 3rd, 2009

Thanks for the great comments. From what you have been saying it looks like most people like the look of the game and where it’s heading which is great news.

Starting again from scratch is not really an option right now :o)

It’s great fun creating the game but I’m really looking forward to getting the book complete and the code and concepts out to people. I love seeing what people have done with the tutorial code so I can’t wait to see what they will come up with using the book.

I’m still open to feedback of course so if you have comments keep them coming. I’ll post another video update when I’ve made more progress with Sir Lamorak’s Quest.

Hi Mike, great job with your tutorials it really speeds up the learning process to have someone tell you whats going on and point out the pitfalls that you may be facing. I’m looking forward to your book as currently I don’t think there are many, if any, true iphone game development books out. Although you mentioned that it will come out in Spring, I live in Australia and its summer now so does that mean its going to take around a year? Unless of course its winter in the UK and its coming out in a few months, hope its in a few month because I can’t wait for a year D:

mike  on November 6th, 2009

Its autumn in the UK and Winter starts in December :o) So not too long to wait.

Hi Mike.
First of all thank you for the tutorial.
I have some experiences with game programming and OpenGL, but with your lessons i have discovered a new world.

As a diligent student i have applied your instruction, and this is the result : http://www.vimeo.com/7477997

Hi Iagmac

The game looks great :o)

I’m glad the tutorials have helped. I LOVE seeing what people have created based on the tutorials. People are so creative :o)

I don't know I forgot it  on November 12th, 2009

Great work,

Looks fantastic, I will certainly buy the book!

At the end of the book will there be a source code to get the images and the final project?

Simon  on November 14th, 2009

Hi Mike,

What recording software did you use to make your videos?

Thanks

Simon

mike  on November 14th, 2009

Hi Simon

I use ScreenFlow (http://www.telestream.net/screen-flow/overview.htm) to record both the tutorials I’ve done and the demos. It’s a great piece of software with a built in editor that really helps speed up the editing process. It also exports to many different formats as well.

When I got the app it was around $99 I think, but well worth it if you need good quality output.

I’m going to be using ScreenFlow when I record the videos that will also accompany the book.

Hi Mike,

I have one other question, where did you get your sounds from?

As they sound quite good.

Cheers

mike  on November 16th, 2009

Hi Simon

I got the sounds I’m using from http://www.sound-effect.com/

If you also check out our forum, there is a thread on useful resource sites http://www.71squared.com/commu.....&t=15

If you find other cool sites let us know or post them in that thread.

This book must be worth more than a pretty penny!
It is being released in 2010 right? Will it be sold world wide or will I have to buy it on amazon?

Scott  on January 20th, 2010

The game looks great. I’ll keep an eye out for the book.

GoodMagician  on January 24th, 2010

Hi Mike,

I am really appreciating your tutorial, which I just found out about. Also I am eagerly awaiting your book, and the chance to play with source code like “Sir Lamorek’s Quest”… It looks as though that would be a basis for many, many different game scenarios in the “find your path to adventure” genre.

Any further information as to when the book is available? Can you put me down for an advance copy?

Your Pal, Chas

GoodMagician  on March 6th, 2010

I just ordered my advance copy! Hooray!

You can order at Barnes & Noble

Supposed to ship 7/23

Thanks Mike!

Chas
