Readers Game – Elementals HD

Elementals HD

It’s been a while since the last readers game was mentioned, so I’m pleased to announce the release of Elementals by Chris Fletcher of Empoc Media. This is a fast paced physics based strategy/puzzle game that has kept me busy for too many hours :o)

There is a growing band of physics based games and puzzles being made available on the app store at the moment and I always struggle to come up with an idea that has not already been done well, or that is unique enough to get some interest.

Chris doesn’t seem to have had that problem. With a combination of physics based interaction and accelerometer control, Elementals HD provides a great range of challenges for you to tackle. The reason for you being here is described in the games narrative:

It is the year 2275, and earth as we know it has come to an end. The last remaining survivors have sought out to restore the planets resources using their unique space crafts known as Elementals. The Elementals have set out into deep space to collect vital elements while avoiding the deathly fireballs of deep space in hopes to restore balance to the once fruitful planet

Each level starts with you special Elemental ship held within a square from which it cannot move unless you tap the screen or a moving platform pushes from your safe haven. By starting in a safe place you have a chance to check out the level and think about how your going to tackle it.

Once your free your ship floats weightless. Control is achieved by tilting the iPhone. A gentle touch is needed to control your ship accurately and good use can be made of crashing your ship into static objects to make it spin around.

So, with the movement sorted out you need to move around the level collecting vital elements needed to restore the once beautiful earth.

This sounds a lot easier than it is and after just a few levels you really do need to start planning where to move as there are dangerous fireballs floating around in deep space. A single collision with one of these menacing enemies and your toast.

There are 30 easy levels followed by 30 extreme levels. This is plenty as the later levels are super challenging.

The game has been implemented well with attention to detail in both the graphics and sound. Elementals HD supports the Retina display (which looks great), Game Centre with leader boards and achievements plus Facebook integration.

It’s a game that frustrates the hell out of me when I get stuck, but I have found myself picking it up again quickly to just have one more go. Others have also found it interesting with Matt Rix, developer of Train Yard commenting that is has:

Unique game mechanics

Great work Chris :o)
