iPhone OS 4.0
So, iPhone OS 4.0 has been released. Whilst we cannot discuss the details of the OS due to the NDA, it would be good to hear what people think about what was announced today. I’m really impressed with the features included in 4.0 and I think its taking the OS a lot further forward.
From a games point of view, I was really interested to see the Game Centre. It will be interesting to see how the functionality that has until now been available through frameworks like Openfient has been implemented by Apple.
I was also really pleased to see multitasking. While not a great deal of detail was given during the presentation, it really does sound like a great addition to the OS.
I think one of the biggest additions for me was iAds. Providing developers with a very sophisticated way to place adds in their apps spot on, especially when you see just how clever these adds can be. I’m hoping that this will help to fuel continued development on the platform and for hard working devs to tap into another revenue stream.
What do you think?

That’s a really good point. I have seen how using Assembler for math functions can really boost performance, so being able to do this without resorting to assembler would be great.

I think everything they mentioned was awesome. Looks
like you’ll need to write a 3rd book!! It just shows when it comes to doing things right APPLE still rules.
Can’t wait till the new iphone comes out in june, I’ll get one…

I totally forgot it was today!!! :( My favorite additions are iAds, Game Centre and “the new iPhone comes out in june”… Wait, WHAT? They talked about that too?!
Why did I forget, why?!!!

so with the updates to MapKit…Does this mean we’ll finally be able to add routes and poly lines to our apps without getting rejected? I’d assume so considering some of the new API’s, but better safe than sorry eh?

Multi-tasking? This sounds like a fundamental shift in direction. The Game Center is only going to be a preview in 4.0, pity we can’t use it for release apps.
AdLib sounds like it might be a painless way to obtain revenue, but the docs don’t say much yet.
The Assets library sounds good. Having a way to save files to the photo library must mean the ability to access filenames. If it is possible to use them to open files as well, it will save storage space, as it won’t be necessary to duplicate images and save copies in our own apps sandbox.
The new AV foundation sounds good too.
So much to play with – so little time !!! :-}

It strikes me that these iAds could be a really feasible way to make money while providing free game apps. People download about 8 times more free games than paid ones. Meaning free games are going to get better and better. Apple are really looking out for their developers in fairness.

From a games perspective, I think the Accelerate math framework sounds interesting too, if it lets you do vector and matrix related math. I’m hoping that it will make it easier to write really fast OpenGL games.
