Count down to my iPad
Being in the UK I don’t yet have an exact date when the iPad will be available to buy. This to a complete fanboy like myself is just unbearable. Luckily, Chuck my editor has been a complete hero and purchased an iPad on my behalf and sent it out to me today.
I can’t tell you how excited I am. It should be arriving by 3pm UK time on Monday 12th but I’m going to be in Italy on Monday, so I won’t get to unpack it until I get home after 9pm :o(
That said, I am such a fanboy that I’m going to record the unpacking and I’ll pop the video up on the blog, so watch out for my unpacking video next week.
I can’t wait to starting writing apps for it and to get some new tutorials up for the iPad, as well as the iPhone.
If you already have your iPad I hope you are enjoying it and I hope to be joining you in just a few days.
Mike

Lucky you!
Rumour has it, that on April 23, all Apple Store employees in Canada can not take the day off. So, we’ll have to wait until then, I guess. I might drive down to Albany, NY and get one before then. A colleague of mine showed me the one he got in Albany, quite a piece of art! He made me hold it for a whole three seconds before taking it out of hands – he’s very protective of it.

Hi Gino
While it will be keeping me from my iPad, I am looking forward to the trip. I like visiting Italy.
I’ve almost finished the interview and will get it to you before the end of the weekend :o)

Hey Mike,
Thanks for all the tutorials and for sharing your knowledge with us. I just got an iPad myself today here in the US. I am having some issues trying to use the code from your book working on the iPad. It seems that the iPad supports both OpenGL ES 1 and 2 but he template from Xcode for a new OpenGL ES application is not working for me neither on the simulator or the device, I just got a blank screen :-( The exact same code works flawlessly on the iPhone while in the iPad OpenGL is not even initialized which is weird. I am debugging the code right know, hopefully I’ll found out what’s going on.

This is a problem I have noticed as well. I only noticed it after I had upgraded to the OS 4.0 beta SDK. I’m just going back to the 3.2 SDK to see if it does the same thing. If so then I think it could be a bug and needs to be reported to Apple.
I’ve not done much debugging at the moment to see what the problem is though, but it should just work. On previous builds of the 3.2 SDK the template worked ok.

I was wondering the same thing, I’m gonna try with the SDK 3.2 to see how it works.

So, how does it feel to use it, Mike? I’m anxious to hear your opinion and see the video.
Sorry, I misquoted the date in my previous post. The iPad is expected April 24, not April 23. Check it out here – http://www.theglobeandmail.com.....le1518954/

Got sick of waiting for Apple UK today and ordered a 32gb from DVDWorld!
How is it Mike?

Hi Mike,
Are you planning on having the video tutorials to be iPad compatible? I went back to SDK 3.2 and the code from the book is working fine on the iPad. I found a couple of differences in the code from the text and the project which I’ll post on safari.
Thanks.

We are working on getting the videos working on the iPad from the site at the moment. All the videos are hosted on vim and if you watch them directly from that site they work fine on the iPad.
The unboxing video is already on vimeo, i just need to do a post. I’m going to include a link to the vim version as well so you can watch it on the iPad.
The iPad itself is just amazing. It just sips at the battery and the responsiveness is incredible. I truly believe that this is a game chaining device and that over the next year we are going to start to see just what this device can do in the hands of us developers. If you are getting one you will not be disappointed.

I just read an article that says international ipads will be delayed till May 5. They say that the US market is snapping them up.

Not good news about the delays, nexus6. Looks like I’ll soon be driving down to the States to get one.
Thanks,
Tony

I am also from outsite the US. Luckly, from Baja, Mexico so I just reserved mine and go there to pick it up. Now I’m a happy iPad user, although, I’m really mad that I can’t buy any applications. Looking forward for your unboxing ;)
