Recent readers games

Apologies to those who have sent me information on their games which they have released based on some part on the tutorials. I am behind on getting these mentioned on the blog, but this post should fix that.

I continue to get updates from blog readers who are pushing on and getting their own games released on the App store which is fantastic. I love to see other peoples creations and how they have use the tutorials in new and unique ways. Below is a list of games that I’ve been told about recently. I’m sure you all realise the amount of time that goes into creating your own game, especially when you are creating your own game engine as well and not using something like Cocos2d. For that reason alone I hope that you check out the games below as they all deserve it.

Aegis – Great looking retro gun boat game. I am totally living an 80s revival with some games on the iPhone. A ton of game designs from that decade are just perfect for the iPhone, either refreshed and updated or played as is :o)

Vile HaberDashery – Written as part of the Global Game Jam and to be released soon, this is a great looking and unique game. Written in 48 hours this shows just what can be achieved by a focused team.

Uranus Attacks – (Stop sniggering at the back of the class please!!!) This is a game in development, but its interesting to see the process the guys are going through create the game. There is some video of the early versions along with blog entries following their progress.

Mug O’Magic – This is a beer drinking game for students and alcoholics alike :O) It’s not a game in the normal sense, but then how do you define game. I like this as its using the iPhone in a very social way with multiple people involved in the game at the same time. I’m sure lots of fun can be had with this over a few beers.

iBash Cars – A great game to relieve stress. You simply smash up vehicles using your fingers :o)

Boffo Ball – This is a tile labyrinth game that makes use of the sound engine from the tutorials.

Freedefeier – An interesting game that gets you to tactically fire fireworks to score points

If I have missed a game that you have send me info about just let me know and I’ll get it added.

Keep up the great work guys, what I’m seeing from everyone so far is great :o)

Mike

Hi Mike,

The links for iBash cars and Boffo don’t seem to work :(. I should say I’m trying them on my phone and that could be the reason but all the others work :).

I’ve also got a question, what does 71squared stand for. It’s something I’ve wondered for a while now lol

Hope to be sending you a preveiw of my game this month. While I’ve only implemented your image class I’ve watched all the tutorials and they have been a tremendous resource for my own developments. I wondered if you had a Splash page that I could include in my game loading sequence, my way of tipping my hat to you sir and 71squared.

It might even be worth doing a short piece on implementing a splashview in OpenGL.

All the best

Hi Simon

71Squared is simple really. The blog is run by myself and John who I have known for over 27 years, ouch. John is the creative mind and developer behind the blog itself i.e. the design, hosting, coding etc as he is a professional web developer now living in Perth Australia.

Whilst thinking of a name for ourselves a few years back, we decided that as we were both born in 1971, we would become 71Sqaured :O)

Boffo seems to only be available on the US App Store which maybe why its not working on the iPhone, but iBash Cars is coming up fine through a normal browser, so not sure what the problem is with that one.

We did do a logo a while back if anyone wanted to add it to their app, which of course we are flattered by. The logo can be found at http://www.71squared.com/logos.....d-logo.png

Let me know if you were thinking of something different and I’m sure John can rustle something up.

The splash screen is a good idea and I’ll look at doing a tutorial on that once the book is done :o)

Thanks for mentioning our game! Vile Haberdashery was a total blast to create and play. I can’t wait until I can tell people they can put i

…they can put it on their iPhones, was what I meant to finish with, hahaha.

@Hannah, your welcome and I’m looking forward to having a play myself :o)

Hi Mike,

The logo is fine i’ll add that :). However I had expected something more like a 320 x 480 and or 480 x 320.

Perhaps with a messag saying developed with the help of 71 squared.

@Simon, leave it with me :o)

On the wording you can change that if you can think of something more suitable.. don’t want to give you all the credit ;)

I do have one other issue, that might be better posted elsewhere, but I wanted to know on the most recent project I’m getting a lot of of leaks from the Image class and wondered if you knew (now further along) about an issues with it?

I’d point them out but i can’t seem to get my head round the output of the leaks performance tool (if have any advice on that also lol).

Cheers

Simon,

I’m not finding any leaks at all in the image class. I’ve modified it quite a bit, but not to the point where I would have “fixed” a resource leak ;-)

I would try using Shark to see what is being leaked and when. If you really think it is being leaked within the Image class itself, I would simplify your app so it it’s easier to find.

Again, I don’t think it is in the Image class. You can also verify this by using the generic template and running it through shark with just a simple animation or image transform.

Thanks Scott I’ll try shark and see what happens . Might well be a false reading in instruments.
