Aliens Invade
Aliens Invade is a reworking of the original classic arcade game Space Invaders. You take control of small one man ship, your mission – destroy the waves of alien attackers and stay alive for as long as possible.
In this reworking, to help you survive just a little bit longer the aliens occasionally drop an upgrade (best not to ask why they do this… they just do). Collect these and you’ll find the game a lot easier!
Quote from the developer:
Almost all of the code for talking to Open GL and Open AL is based on the tutorial code.

Nice twist on an old classic. Hope it takes off (no pun intended!). Any word on how long it took to develop.

Very cool game. The power ups give it another twist which works well with the original idea. A very well executed game I say.

Thanks all!
I started off development around the start of May when I came accross these tutorials – I think I started showing people the basic prototype around the end of May and then June was spent adding the power ups etc and then July polishing and tweaking the difficulty.
I’d say that 90% of the basic game was finished in May.
Working part time on a project does mean it drags out. I think if you compressed it down to real man days there is probably only a couple of weeks in there – it does help having someone else do the heavy lifting of learning the OpenGL stuff :)
The sound engine stuff came along just at the right time as well – I’d been struggling with the AVAudioPlayer and couldn’t get rid of some really annoying glitches.
One thing I would say is doing the graphics yourself when you have limited skills really does suck up time. I’m still struggling with photoshop and illustrator. If you can find someone who knows what they are doing they’ll knock out a few aliens in no time.
Cheers
Chris.
